London Food Hygiene Rating Map
An interactive map of every London restaurant, cafe, pub and takeaway with its current food hygiene rating from the UK Food Standards Agency. Search by postcode or venue name, filter by rating, and check any place before you eat — all data is live from the official FSA ratings API.
How the map works
Each coloured dot on the map above represents a food business registered with the FSA. The colour tells you the hygiene rating it received on its most recent inspection by an Environmental Health Officer (EHO). Click a dot to see the venue name, address and rating date. Use the filter pills in the top-left to hide or show specific rating levels — for example, turn off 5 and 4 to reveal only problem venues.
The map loads restaurants within a five-mile radius of whatever part of London is on screen. Pan or zoom to a new area and click "Search this area" to refresh with the venues in that viewport. You can also type a postcode (e.g. SW1A) or a restaurant name into the search box to jump straight to it.
What the 0–5 food hygiene ratings mean
Ratings are awarded after an on-site inspection covering three areas: how hygienically food is handled and prepared, the physical condition of the premises, and how the business manages food safety going forward. The lowest of the three scores generally sets the overall rating.
Where the data comes from
All ratings on this map are pulled directly from the Food Standards Agency open data API. The FSA publishes ratings under the Open Government Licence, so anyone can build tools on top of it. The database covers every registered food premises in England, Wales and Northern Ireland — not just restaurants, but also schools, hospitals, care homes, manufacturers and distributors. (Scotland operates a different pass/fail system which is not shown on this map.)
Because we query the FSA live every time someone uses the map, you always see the most current rating. If a restaurant was re-inspected yesterday and its rating changed, it will show the new rating as soon as the FSA updates its database — usually within a few days of the visit.
For restaurants: how to check and improve your own rating
If you own or manage a restaurant and want to check your current rating, search your postcode above or look up your venue on the FSA rating lookup. A low rating has three main causes in practice: sloppy paperwork (no HACCP plan, missing temperature logs), physical issues (poor pest control, structural damage), or food handling mistakes observed during the inspection.
The fastest way to raise your score on the "Confidence in Management" component — which often caps the overall rating — is to move from paper records to a digital food safety system. Read our guide on how to improve your food hygiene rating, or download our free HACCP template to get started.
Frequently asked questions
Where does the data on this map come from?
Every rating is pulled live from the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) ratings API — the official source for all food hygiene ratings in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
How often are ratings updated?
Ratings only change when an EHO re-inspects a business. The FSA publishes the new rating within a few days, and our map reflects whatever is currently live in the FSA database.
Can a restaurant appeal a low rating?
Yes. A business can request a re-rating visit after making improvements, appeal against the rating, or publish a "right to reply" statement alongside it. Everything is handled through the local council's food safety team.
Is it illegal to eat at a restaurant with a 0 or 1 rating?
No, it is not illegal. A low rating indicates serious hygiene issues that need urgent improvement, but the business is still permitted to trade unless the council issues a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice. We'd simply advise caution.
Do I need to display my rating in the window?
In Wales and Northern Ireland, yes — display is mandatory. In England, display is voluntary. If you'd like an auto-updating badge for your own website, grab our free rating badge widget.
